Abstract

Transportation to New South Wales was punishment and exile. But it was exile to a settlement in a largely homogenous society. For those who could deal with the emotional impact of separation and who were perhaps able to communicate with loved ones left behind, was the opportunity it provided greater than the intended punishment?
