    Abstract

    Since the turn of the new century theAustralianOffshore GeneralSkilled Migration(hereinafter called ‘GSM’) program has experienced significant changes in the application process.Previously, an overseas applicant could have his case assessed completely at his localAustralianEmbassy or Consulate.Only complicated cases required assistance frommigrationofficers located in Australia.Presently the process is completely different.This paper will discuss the requirements to migrate to Australia under the Skill-Independentcategory of the GSM, using a senior business manager as an example.The next sections will introduce his Hong Kong andAustraliantax exposures respectively, before and after arriving in Australia.
