Abstract

Three minutes to midnight and the world is in trouble. Environmental experts like Thomas Berry and David Suzuki3 cite the cause of this trouble as the general human disconnection with the natural world. The size and extent of the human population and the rate and extent of adverse effects that can be caused particularly with new technology, have resulted in this period being labelled by Kolbert as “the Sixth Extinction”. Australia is a biologically rich and mega-diverse continent but has one of the highest rates of natural and cultural biodiversity loss.
