Abstract

Animal technologists dedicate their careers to the humane husbandry, breeding, welfare and management of research animals, whilst also providing para-veterinary expertise in research. Although their field is under-recognised, usually underpaid, provides little opportunity for further study (at least locally), and has almost no career path, these professionals continue to provide excellence in laboratory animal care. This paper discusses their role, value to biomedical research and also alerts scientists about declining retention rates of the field's most experienced personnel.
