Abstract

Anthropologists have challenged ‘the generally unquestioned assumption that adherents of a given religion, any religion, understand that adherence in term of belief’. Morgan argues that beliefs may be much more productively understood as emerging from and enfolded within the practices, things and feelings that shape individuals and communities over time. Beliefs are what people do, how they do it, where and when, rather than only why, which is the traditional framing of the contents of belief.
