Abstract

Arab Australian men may experience unique mental health challenges. Cultural factors related to masculine norms are suspected to play a role, but a clear understanding of these influences is lacking. Understanding these challenges is crucial for developing culturally responsive mental health interventions and support services. This thematic analysis investigated Arab Australian men’s perspectives on psychological problems and help-seeking attitudes and behaviors. The study featured 45 in-depth interviews with first-generation Arab Australian men. Beliefs about the cause of mental health problems included four themes: being “stuck” between two worlds, characterized by reconciling conflicting values and expectations; masculinity; loneliness, social isolation, and English language struggles; and work and self-worth. Beliefs, behaviors, and sources of help centered around three themes: a preference for informal support; negative attitudes toward formal support; and coping strategies and internalization of problems, including religious practices and engaging in individual activities. This study highlighted the complex interplay of cultural norms, migration experiences, and traditional masculine ideals shaping Arab Australian men’s mental health experiences. Findings emphasized the need for culturally responsive environments, increased mental health literacy, and addressing stigma and masculine norms. Recommendations included targeted awareness campaigns, culturally sensitive services, addressing systemic issues, and culturally tailored treatment. Further research is needed to examine service providers’ roles, acculturation differences, and family dynamics to develop effective interventions.
