Abstract

A paper published this week reported that private obstetricians in private hospitals provide the safest and most cost-effective care. Although the authors cleverly compared a matched cohort of women linking some clinical and cost outcomes, two very different systems of care were compared: one that offers less than one quarter of Australian couples a personal choice of caregiver and place of birth (private care) compared to the other that caters for all comers (public care).
