Abstract
Addressing some of the same issues raised in Mittelman's essay regarding the academic study of globalization, Paul James's influential article begins with an astute assessment of the conceptual difficulties involved in defining "globalization." The Australian social theorist and global studies scholar then proceeds to show how such definitional issues often hide a multitude of methodological problems that relate directly to the study of complex globalization dynamics. The core of James's article is taken up with a series of propositions about the nature of globalization that focus on the changing framework of spatiality and temporality in our global age. Proposing a layered methodological framework that combines four levels of analysis-empirical analysis, conjectural analysis, integrational analysis, and categorical analysis-the author of1ers an innovative approach to the development of a coherent social theory of globalization.
