Asking the answerable question

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Healthcare systems are faced with the challenge of improving the quality of care and decreasing the risk of adverse events. Evidence from clinical research is necessary but not sufficient for delivering optimal care. Knowledge translation (KT) is the scientific study of methods for closing the knowledge-to-practice gap, and of the barriers and facilitators inherent in this process. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is predicated on a knowledge need that is articulated in a research question. When undertaking any research, answerable questions are important to: 1. ensure you have the correct terminology so that you are confident that you have collated the previous research in the area; 2. help you establish your outcome measures and; 3. help others find your work once it is published.
