Abstract
![CDATA[This chapter will discuss briefly the past and why tests on their own failed to provide the quality of information about student learning that was required. It will then very briefly discuss the influence of globalization and the movement to alternative assessment as an attempt to find alternatives to the test in order to provide quality information about learning outcomes. Finally, it will discuss the current global movement in mathematics assessment involving the construction of "student mathematical learning frameworks".]]
