Abstract

The treatment of asylum seekers in the modern nation-state violates human right norms. Exclusion from nation, an emphasis on border protection, and the use of immigration detention facilities are among the approaches aimed at deterring people from seeking safe haven. Many of these practices are antithetical to social work ethics and values, and social work practitioners can use their practice wisdom and advocacy skills to promote alternatives to current policies and practices.
