    Abstract

![CDATA[A linguistic analysis of newspaper articles in Sydney, Australia containing the string arab between October 2002 and March 2003 revealed that Australia's print media presents a distorted model of the Arab World. Significant geographical parts of the Arab World are presented in negative contexts related to war. Analytical techniques such as concept analysis, concordance analysis, analysis of collocations and analysis of sematic roles are found to be effective in revealing the details of the model. It is speculated that this distorted model may have played a role in the apparent collapse of significant public opposition to Australia's participation in the Iraq war. Suggestions are made for broadening the study along several dimensions.]]
