Abstract
We live in a world of violence and poverty, displacement and environmental destruction, of war and collapse. Yet humans repeatedly and consistently turn towards the arts, as though there is an artistic instinct that drives us, as individuals and as community. Amidst the conflict and turmoil, do we understand art as a distraction, taking us away from what should really be our focus? Do we understand art as an indulgence: galleries that display cultural artefacts, their role as a repository of the aesthetic; or theatre performances as creating a rarefied atmosphere, celebrating the art of drama among a limited and select few? Here, the arts take many shapes, including performance, music, painting, writing, dance and poetry.
