Research output: Book/Research ReportResearch report

Abstract

On Monday 22nd April 2019, 29,047 people attended the first match at Bankwest Stadium, starting a new chapter in the proud history of the Parramatta Eels. Bankwest Stadium is built from the ashes of Cumberland Oval, the stadium that was burned to the ground by the Parramatta Eels supporters' when they won their first premiership in 1981. The importance of Parramatta Eels reimaging their new home stadium and the conservation of the club's history is imperative to the match day experience for their fans, old and new, being a success. The evolution of the fan experience means that sports clubs are tasked with creating a more connected, engaging, and interactive environment. Fans are not just simple spectators, and sports facilities need to become highly adaptive entertainment destinations for before, during and after the event to accommodate this. No two sports fans are alike, and sporting organisations should be agile in adapting and evolving their match-day offerings to address different fan segments. The aim of this current research project is to better understand the various elements which influences fan participation in the match-day experience at Bankwest Stadium. Stadium function as important pieces of civil architecture, connect sports clubs to the communities around them and give local fans a "home" to be proud of. Through investigating stadium design and use from a fan perspective, as well as factors which can inhibit or enhance the fan experience, this preliminary research report aims to provide insights for Parramatta RLC to improve fan engagement, satisfaction and retention at Bankwest Stadium on match-day.
