N2 - The theme of this issue of M/C Journal is 'country', with a remit to contemplate the multifaceted and pliable deployment of that term. Notably, 'country' can be used synonymously with both 'the rural' and 'the nation', and in many contemporary western societies these evocations are not so far apart. Indeed, they often overlap: countryside landscapes (which may be either pastoral or wilderness) are frequently used as symbolic sites to encapsulate broader national imaginaries and thus project a wider sense of national identity and belonging.
