Abstract
Current diagnostic systems define three groups of Eating Disorders: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) or atypical anorexia nervosa and atypical bulimia nervosa. The former are well-defined Eating Disorders, but are less common than EDNOS in both clinic samples and community surveys. Anorexia nervosa is found in less than 0.5%, bulimia nervosa in about 1%, and EDNOS, including BED, in 3-5% of young women. The peak age of onset of common eating disorders, i.e., bulimia nervosa and EDNOS, is in late adolescence and young adulthood.
