Abstract
![CDATA[Special steels namely high strength steel (HSS) and stainless steel (SS) generally exhibit improved strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. When formed into structural elements and juxtaposed with concrete, significant benefits arise in terms of stiffness, strength and potential energy absorption. This paper will examine these benefits and will primarily focus on those which can be exploited with these configurations in columns of major landmark structures. The presentation will firstly focus on the applications of special steels, including past, present and future projects. An overview of the behaviour of these elements and a summary of research which has been conducted over the last decade will then be given. The presentation will then surmise the subtle differences that need to be applied to design approaches in order to ensure both efficient and safe design of these structural elements. In particular the paper will highlight the nuances which are needed to be addressed when designing with HPS and SS in concrete filled columns using existing international design codes. Finally, the paper will provide a view of future research which is required in order to fully exploit the special properties of these steels.]]
