Abstract
![CDATA[Modern structural engineering which considers whole of life cycle costing of a project has illustrated that stainless steel can be utilised for more than just architectural applications. Major engineering structures such as the Stonecutters Bridge in Hong Kong and the Prada Tower in San Francisco are utilising stainless steel as one of the major structural elements for both structural and durability purposes. This paper will consider the behaviour and design of concrete filled steel columns utilising closed stainless steel cross-sections under the combined actions of axial compression and bending. The paper includes a theoretical treatment of these issues. A basic mechanics model which couples the compatibility and equilibrium of a concrete filled column under the combined actions was developed. The model incorporates the full nonlinear response of the stainless steel and concrete infill. The model is compared with the Eurocode 4 model for the strength of short composite columns under combined actions. Modifications to the design model are then suggested to allow for the efficient use of stainless steel with this technique.]]
