Abstract
![CDATA[The flexural behaviour of steel beam sections subjected to flexural loading has been studied extensively, and detailed design methods developed. These design methods have been developed on a broad database of experimental work carried out on so-called normal grade steels (up to 450 MPa yield strength). With recent advances in manufacturing processes and better understanding of the chemistry of steels, the manufacturing of high strength structural steels (up to 690 MPa yield) has become more economical making them a viable solution for use in steel structures. The current European and Australian design standards limit the maximum allowable yield strength of structural steels to be between 355 to 450 MPa. To allow the use of high strength steels in normal structures, the Centre for Construction Technology and Research has carried out an extensive experimental study into the behaviour of these steels. In this paper a number of experiments carried out to investigate the flexural behaviour of webs in high strength steel beams is presented. The experiments cover a range of web slenderness. The current provision in the Australian Steel Structures standard are investigated with an emphasis on the limitations on the slenderness of webs for different Classes of beams. This study coupled with the results of the experimental work demonstrates that the current design provisions for webs in flexure are appropriate for high strength steels.]]
