BER of OFDM with directional antennas in time-variant environments

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperConference Paperpeer-review

Abstract

This paper derives the theoretical average bit error rate (BER) expressions of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems employing binary phase shift keying (BPSK), differential BPSK (DBPSK) and M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) in a multi-path fading channel using the angle-of-arrival probability density function (pdf) at the mobile where a directional antenna is mounted. The channel introduces Doppler shift with the maximum Doppler spread fd. Two special cases are considered (i) fd is Gaussian distributed and (ii) fd is Rayleigh distributed. Two major diversity techniques are considered: (i) selective combining (SC), and (ii) maximal ratio combining. Detailed discussions and comparisons on performance of OFDM systems employing SC, MRC with directional antennas are given.
