    Abstract

This chapter looks at a dilemma for this book, which engages with possible roles and strategies for the museum and science sectors committed to tackling the challenges of climate change. Climate change is so important that the importance may get in the way of the best efforts of committed institutions to do their bit for this cause. The dilemma arises from what Hulme (2009) has called its status as a "wicked problem" (Rittel and Webber 1973). "Wicked problems" involve a complexity so great that the terms of the problem and the nature of possible solutions, in science and policy alike, cannot be determined. Normal strategies of communication break down in this situation. They are ineffective or couterproductive.
