Abstract
Alpha Centauri is a binary star which appears as one single star to the naked eye in the southern skies. It is part of a triple star system located four light years from earth. Binary Star was written for toy pianist Antonietta Loffredo and the Appassionato Ensemble, and is dedicated to Johanna Durrington Blom whose interest in astronomy introduced me to Alpha Centauri.

Research background (field, context, research question)
While the theme of space has interested composers of the 20th century it has often been music for film, there are some well-known exceptions – Gustav Holst’s The Planets explores sonically the idea of the personality of each major star through Greek mythology and the god association.
Research contribution (innovation, new knowledge)
Binary Star – Alpha Centauri for chamber ensemble – explores the idea of space with a chamber ensemble of 5 instruments. The work is one of three commissioned works written by three international women composers under the idea of Constellations. Capturing an idea of space is achieved in musical style, instrumentation, through the inclusion of the metallic sound of toy piano in the ensemble, and drawing on the concept of binary and circling as structural devices.
Research significance (evidence of excellence)
The work has received two performances, one in Italy by the Appassionata Ensemble on 19th December, 2021, in Como; and one in Parramatta, Sydney, by Sirius Ensemble. The score is published by Wirripang Pty. Ltd.
