Bond strength in concrete-filled stainless steel tubes

Abstract

This paper studies the bond strength between the stainless steel tube and concrete in concrete-filled stainless steel tubes (CFSST). Push-out tests were conducted on 8 CFSST specimens and 2 reference specimens consisted of carbon steel. The main variables investigated in this study were: (a) the steel type (stainless steel and carbon steel); (b) the section type (circular and square); (c) the concrete type (normal concrete and recycled aggregate concrete); and (d) the concrete strength. The test results indicate that when stainless steel was used to replace carbon steel, the bond strength decreased by 45% and 34% for circular and square specimens, respectively. For stainless steel tubes filled with high-strength concrete, comparatively low bond strength was obtained. Three possible measures are introduced in this paper which can be sued solely or jointly to increase the bond strength in CFSST columns.
