Abstract
New Chinese Migrations is a timely recalibration of Chinese diaspora studies. This collection takes up the task of portraying post-1980 Chinese migrants, not only examining cases of recent and emergent transnational and interstate Chinese mobilities but also offering insight into motivations and aspirations around moving. Given the global and regional political and economic development, this book also captures the hyper-diversity within Chinese diaspora, identifying trends, patterns and dynamics of intraregional and intrasubregional migration within Asia-Pacific, focusing on mainland China, Hongkong, Taiwan and Southeast Asian countries. Consequently, it also includes a spatial dimension of Chinese migration and demonstrates its impact on regional policy making, reconstruction of space such as Chinatowns, and other communities and networks. This collection includes four parts: ‘New migrants from mainland China’, ‘The HK–Taiwan–China migration triangle’, ‘The ongoing migration of Chinese overseas from Southeast Asia’ and a conclusion. The book articulates the necessity to conceptualise emerging new categories of Chinese migrants through a critical examination of interactions, connections and conflicts between old and new groups. In doing so, this book is a valuable reference for students and researchers in migration studies who are seeking new approaches diaspora studies. It is also useful for policy makers and other stakeholders in understanding the nuanced diversity rather than homogeneity of Chinese migrants.
