Abstract

Book review of: The Mozi: A Complete Translation, by Ian Johnston, Hong Kong: The Chinese University Press, 2010. ISBN 978-962-996-270-8. "The problems of the world have not changed much in two thousand years and neither have the explanations for them. In 2011, when Muslims were attacking Christians in Nigeria, and Iran and Israel were readying for possible nuclear war, Christmas messages from the Pope and the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney called on people and governments to be more loving. In the fifth century BC, when the various states that made up the country later united under one government as China were engaged in long-term internecine strife, the philosopher known as Mozi å¢¨å (Master Mo) called on people to put into practice 'universal love' jian-ai 兼愛."
