Abstract

Women of the storm: civic activism after Hurricane Katrina by Emmanuel David provides details about the groups of elite women who played the role of active leaders in the recovery after two hurricanes, Katrina (2005) and Rita (2005), the 'women of the storm' denoted by David (WOS). The book predominantly shows how after Katrina (the most significant catastrophe in the USA), small groups of women utilised their power and influence by engaging the policymakers and senators in the reconstruction process of New Orleans. The book also documents their voluntary labour addressing the coastal restoration infrastructure needs for the renovation of the wetlands and the region broadly.
