Abstract
The author has been involved in a number of multi-actor collaborative ventures having two common attributes. Firstly a relatively long-term breeding network environment was established to explore opportunities for short-term, value-adding projects, and secondly a broker function was needed to both facilitate exploration activities and to facilitate project deals. The broker role is compared in four different kinds of case example. It is observed that the broker role is very influential in the breeding environment phase, but has limited influence in subsequent specific project phases beyond identifying an opportunity.
