    Abstract

The author has a long-standing involvement in multi-firm collaborations and continues to seek better tools to help design and optimize them. Collaboration is viewed as a strategic response to markets, which may be characterized as intersecting networks of actors, activities and resources. In this paper the actor aspect is considered. It is argued that generic roles can be identified in conventional organizations, and that generic roles can also be constructed in virtual organizations. It is further argued that how well these roles are enacted significantly impact the performance of a virtual organization. A case example is used to illustrate how a generic role framework can be used to help characterize the workings of a complex virtual organization.
