Built environment of Australia in 2050: scenarios and strategies

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This paper explores the future of the built environment in Australia by 2050, focusing on plausible scenarios and strategic interventions essential for achieving net-zero carbon emissions and addressing climate change. Through a comprehensive review of current trends, technological advancements, and policy frameworks, the study envisions multiple scenarios that highlight the potential pathways and challenges ahead. These scenarios are underpinned by critical factors such as urban planning, sustainable construction practices, energy-efficient technologies, and the integration of digital innovations. The paper also identifies key strategies that stakeholders—ranging from policymakers and urban planners to construction professionals, designers, and technologists—must adopt to mitigate environmental impacts and enhance climate resilience. By synthesizing interdisciplinary research and expert insights, this paper aims to conclude with the identification of key strategies that can lead to the sustainable development of the built environment sectors. It outlines a number of actions based on digital technology and a green information economy. These strategies aim to ensure a future better for everyone in a digital built Australia.
