![CDATA[This chapter provides an overview of the emergency department (ED) within the context of the Australian healthcare system with regard to its function, locality and the healthcare professionals who work within them. This is placed within the perspective of a diverse and multicultural ageing population who are one of the largest groups to present to the ED. The role of the Australian Triage Scale, used in the ED to categorise the urgency of medical need and to prioritise patient care, will also be explored.]]
