Abstract

In 1836, the convict ship the Moffatt left Portsmouth harbour in England to travel halfway around the world to the Colony of NSW, where it nearly sank on arrival. On board the ship were eighteen convicts from the West Indies, including Jamaican men William Buchanan and Richard Holt. Jamaica born, Sydney based author Sienna Brown goes on a deep dive into the archives to uncover the little known history of these men. This documentary feature combines detailed archival investigation with creative reimagining to tell the story of Caribbean convicts in Australia and raise awareness of the diversity of Australia's early colonial history. The documentary tells for the first time the stories of several Caribbean men who left only the faintest archival trace. It was produced by Sienna Brown with Ben Etherington.
