N2 - This issue of the Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning explores the challenges and experiences of outdoor education in Latin America. This initiative arose from the need to expand our current knowledge about outdoor education in the context of different Latin American countries, with all their particular and peculiar cultural, historical, economic, social, political, ethnic and environmental contexts (Galeano, 2009; Gallini, 2009; Leff, 2003, 2005). We believe that the different possibilities and forms of manifestation of outdoor education as performed and experienced in the context of Latin American culture provides an opportunity to explore the diverse relationships that are established in contemporary social life in specific cultural contexts, particularly those that have not been predominant in current academic debates in the field. By doing so we expect that the articles featuring in this thematic issue will present initiatives that can contribute to a deeper and more refined understanding of the various and unique possibilities and issues faced, on a broader geographic scale, by the field of adventure education and outdoor learning.
