Abstract
Charkha (spinning wheel) and Kargha (loom) showcases over one hundred Indian objects from the Powerhouse collection, acquired since the 1880s. Many date back to the foundation of the museum and have not been seen before. The official opening of the exhibition, supported by the Consulate General of India in Sydney, coincided with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of India's independence. Beyond illustrating the richness of the Indian collection of the Powerhouse Museum of more than 4500 objects, one of the main objectives of the exhibition is to reach out to the Indian community of Parramatta and greater Sydney in order to engage them with the Powerhouse Parramatta. During the official opening and the celebration of India's independence, over one thousand visitors visited Charkha and Kargha.
