Abstract
This paper examines the contemporary media presence of Charles Darwin and in particular the use of his image on Internet websites. To date there has been no comprehensive study of the iconography of Darwin. It is argued that the cultural values associated with images of Darwin now obscure critical assessments of the theory of natural selection. The paper takes a historical approach and considers how the current uses of Darwin's sovereign-like head draw on imaging trends established in the 1860s. The imaging of Darwin and the contemporary self-identities built from this imaging, now form the 'lens' through which the theoretical and scientific ideas associated with his name are viewed.
