Chemistry education's plight

Research output: Contribution to journalComment/debate

Abstract

Some problems of chemistry education in Australia are discussed and some solutions are proposed. Over the last decade, the percentage of chemistry students in Australia has dropped from 2.1 percent to only 1.4 percent. A reason behind this is that chemistry is more often being taught as a service course to another discipline. Also, fewer students are viewing chemistry as their final academic destination. Many reasons have been mooted for chemistry education's plight including pre-tertiary education, uninspiring courses, and lack of career opportunities.
