Abstract

For many children and adolescents in South Asia and the Pacific (SAP) region, hunger is part of their everyday lives. The SAP region is home to almost 700 million children under 18 years of age, forming 36% of the 1.82 billion Children and an astonishing 350 million adolescents (UNICEF 2025), whilst also experiencing some of the highest rates of malnutrition in the world (UNICEF 2023). This poses not only direct risks to health, but also indirect risks to economy and futures, as the children of today are the future of tomorrow. Centering children and adolescents as change makers through child-led research can offer meaningful opportunities for children and adolescents to participate in decision-making that impacts their lives.

World Vision's ENOUGH campaign was established on the firm belief that every family deserves to be able to put enough of the right food on their table (World Vision International, 2024). The objective for this project is to empower young people through increasing their research knowledge and skills to inform and influence child focused policy change within their communities and across the SAP region.

A critical component of this is The Child-Led Advocacy and Meaningful Participation (CHAMP) platform, which is a dynamic regional initiative dedicated to child rights and wellbeing in the SAP region. The platform and voice are driven by three changemakers from each country who lead and connect children and young people's advocacy efforts to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Extending upon the valuable work of the CHAMP leaders who identified the need for child lead research in the area of hunger and malnutrition in Singapore August 2023, the Young and Resilient Research Centre (Y&R) at Western Sydney University is proud to partner with World Vision International to deliver the CHAMP Child-Led Research
project.
