Children's sexual citizenship

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

In this essay I have briefly outlined how dominate discourses of childhood and childhood innocence work simultaneously to position sexuality as problematic and/or relevant to children. However, as pointed out in this discussion, sexuality is experienced in multiple and fluid ways and is central to one's identify, including those of children and young people. Sexual citizenship is relevant and important in children's and young people's lives as it is about developing ethical gendered and sexual subjects; understanding the importance of consent and respect in relationships; respecting gender and sexuality diversity; awareness and understanding of one's rights as gendered and sexual citizens; building confidence and resilience in order to become informed sexual subjects; and fostering sexual health and wellbeing. In order to become ethical, agentic, competent sexual citizens, children and young people need access to sexuality knowledge, including ongoing comprehensive sexuality education that is part of their schooling. As such, children's access to sexuality education is a social justice and children's rights issue.
