Abstract

![CDATA[This paper aims to investigate the discourse functions of the shi ... de construction in Chinese and to highlight the conditions for it to be translated into the no da construction in Japanese. Examining the data collected from a Japanese-Chinese bilingual corpus, this study has confirmed that the discourse functions of the shi ... de construction can be classified into five groups. Among them, the forth and fifth groups, which are used to provide further information or ask a question about an issue that is already mentioned earlier in the text, have shown the highest percentages in having no da in their Japanese translations.]]
