    Abstract

Sufi fable describes a phoenix-like bird, the huma,1 that lives its entire life high above the earth, where it feeds, interacts, reproduces and lays its egg; an egg that hurtles toward the earth while, inside, the unborn chick begins to form. Fran Peavey- activist educator, storyteller and author of Heart Politics - compares the huma chick's dilemma with that faced by social justice activists. 'Will the chick's beak harden in time to peck its way through its shell?' Fran asked during her workshops. 'Will its wings form and strengthen in time to avoid collision and to soar back to the stratosphere?'
