Abstract

Increased expectations of quality in education have helped health professional education (HPE) emerge as an academic discipline. Increases in the number and size of health professions programmes have created demand for educators, but HPE career pathways remain unclear for ‘early career educators’ (ECEs). Additional uncertainty comes from the varied work roles and lack of a universal definition for HPEs. Reported definitions of ECEs vary greatly: some are based on qualifications and others on years of experience. We suggest that ECEs are best self-identified rather than labelled, thus incorporating the diverse and often serendipitous career paths of any educators who consider themselves relatively new to HPE. Examples include clinicians establishing a new career direction after a long clinical career, or basic scientists who find postdoctoral employment educating health professionals.
