Abstract

The concept of tumour ‘staging’ to categorize colorectal cancer (CRC) patients into groups with differing prognoses after resection of the primary is a universally accepted approach that has withstood the test of time. Following on from Dukes now legendary collaboration with Lockhart-Mummery Snr and others at St Mark’s Hospital in the 1920s, initially with rectal cancer, there have been numerous attempts to develop, refine and improve CRC staging to better meet the needs of all those involved in patient care.
