Abstract
![CDATA[This judgement by Trial Chamber II represents another finding by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) that a senior government official was guilty of the crime of genocide during the carnage that took place in Rwanda between April-June 1994. This follows the earlier convictions for genocide of inter alia Jean Kambanda, the former Prime Minister of Rwanda (who had pleaded guilty), and before that Jean-Paul Akayesu, the former bourgmestre of Taba. The accused in this case was also found guilty of crimes against humanity (extermination) and crimes against humanity (rape), although he was acquitted of crimes against humanity (murder) and the crime of complicity in genocide, the latter acquittal being as a direct result of his guilt for the crime of genocide. As a result of his conviction of these crimes, the accused was sentenced by the trial Chamber to a single sentence of 30 years of imprisonment.]]
