Abstract

The purpose of the present paper is to review direct search methods of minimization for engineering problems, and to compare the best available techniques on objective functions which are typical of those encountered in the design of electrical machines. The constrained minimization problems are studied using the SUMT technique with a view to achieving good efficiency and useful conclusions are drawn. It is concluded that Powell's method is likely to be the best general method at the present time.
