    Abstract

Web engineering deals with systematic, disciplined and quantifiable approaches to development, operation and maintenance of Web-based systems. In other words, it is the application of engineering principles and practices to Web applications and website development. This immediately raises a question: isn't this the realm of software engineering, only as applied to Web-based systems? A short answer to this question is: for Web-based systems, software engineering is necessary but not sufficient, whether for development, operational or maintenance purposes. This article briefly explains why, and offers references to the work that is going on in Web engineering.
