Abstract

Successful construction management is a competitive process that depends on the trade-off of time, cost, and scope. However, existing construction informatics (CI) frameworks often fall short of supporting this intricate process. A novel CI framework that leverages building information modelling (BIM) is proposed to enhance project management knowledge. Taking into consideration the key objectives of this study, enhancing stakeholder communication, enabling more reliable informed decision making, and reducing potential cost overruns. A case study involving the construction of a single-family house is assessed to validate the practicality and scalability of the proposed CI framework, using BIM tools such as Autodesk Revit, Microsoft Office Project, and Autodesk Navisworks Manage. This research demonstrates the important role of BIM tools in facilitating improved communication among stakeholders, particularly during the early design stages. The proposed framework effectively schedules coordination and mitigates communication failures, reducing inefficiencies and cost overruns during the planning, design, and construction phases. This research underscores the potential of the proposed CI framework to provide useful mechanisms for leveraging BIM to support project management knowledge and drive successful construction outcomes.
