Contar para ser contados : el video indígena como práctica ciudadana

Translated title of the contribution: Recounting to be counted : Indigenous video as a practice of citizenship

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the emergence of indigenous video in Latin America and especially the development of Mapuche media in Chile since the nineties. Emergence is understood both in terms of the emergence of new political actors who exercise their right to citizenship through practices of audiovisual production and emergence in terms of urgency of new indigenous social movements in Latin America, who are demanding to be counted in and be taken into account in ongoing struggles for self-representation and self-determination. The central argument of the chapter is that communication practices open up new possibilities for performing citizenship, where the indigenous video develops as a platform for conceptualising an ethnic citizenship.
