Abstract
The introduction of continuous-flow (cf) technology in mechanical circulatory support has expanded the armamentarium of VAD options and is nowadays considered the first-line therapy in adults. Miniaturization of pump design has made it a promising option to reduce morbidity and overcome the need for hospitalization for the pediatric population. Implantation in older children became feasible and improved the quality of life. The quest now goes to children even below BSA 1m2. This chapter summarizes the increasing experiences gained so far worldwide by using cf-VADs in children. Furthermore, the application of two cf-VADs working as intracorporeal BVAD is discussed as well as adults suffering from congenital heart defects suffering from heart failure (CHD).
