Research background (field, context, research question)
Repertoire for solo viola is limited. The idioms of popular music have been drawn into classical music through the orchestral works of Australian composers Matthew Hindson and Stuart Greenbaum, and other 20th composers in chamber works of William Walton and others. Less frequently have the idioms been the basis for works for solo string instrument.
Research contribution (innovation, new knowledge)
Cool Grooves adapts three late 20th century-early 21st century popular music idioms for solo viola. The repetitive nature and four-square phrasing of the idioms, funk and grunge, are worked through with evolving changes, keeping the two movements always moving forwards. And the middle movement, rock opera, has a more through-composed, flowing structure which complements the movements on either side.
Research significance (evidence of excellence)
Cool Grooves has been performed in Melbourne by Helen Bowers, at a Melbourne Composers League concert in May, 2023, and the score has been published for solo viola and for solo violin by Wirripang Pty. Ltd. The AMEB have accepted Cool Grooves as one of their publications, Grade 4.
