Abstract
The societal demand that the operations of all business organisations must not harm the ecological systems on which all life – including humanity – depends, is gaining ground. Sustainable development has become the dominant narrative, and key institutions have emerged to facilitate its adoption. We claim that organisations optimised to succeed in the currently prevailing system, and without radical redesign, will never be sustainable. Corporations that continue to privilege growth as their central objective are following a weak sustainability model unhelpful in the current environmental crisis.
