COVID-19 and sport in South America : resistance, indignation and hope

Research output: Chapter in Book / Conference PaperChapter

Abstract

This chapter examines the impact of COVID-19 on sport in South America. The authors argue that COVID-19 as a historical event did not give rise to conditions that can be considered new for the sporting landscape, but that the pandemic exacerbated the preexisting social logics in the region. For instance, the authors draw on recent examination of women’s football in Colombia to argue that COVID-19 has expanded inequality across race, class and gender in a region that is already one of the most socially and economically uneven in the world. In short, the authors deploy a critical lens to explore sport and social inequalities in South America during the global pandemic.
